Larger Catfish Seem to be Feeding Most Ravenously

Permit and Boat Rentals are sold at the Ranger Station. At present, we do not sell fishing licenses, bait, or tackle, so anglers must acquire these essential items elsewhere prior to their visit. All day motor boats are discounted to $20 for active military every Saturday.

Due to the threat of Quagga mussels, there is a ban on private water craft and equipment. Restricted equipment includes; private boats, canoes, kayaks, float tubes, trolling motors, fish finders, anchors, and other equipment that contacts the water.

The park is currently closed weekdays and will re-open for weekday fishing and general recreation in mid-December following the first trout plant, as always, we will remain open on the weekends.

Fall is the time when the larger catfish seem to be feeding most ravenously, as a result they are more likely to be caught by those anglers rigged up with tackle strong enough to corral a twenty, or thirty pound, whisker fish. Lake Wohlford cats prefer cut mackerel or chicken liver.

Cooling water temps are creating favorable conditions for bass fishing. The bass can be found lingering around structure. Bass respond well to shad raps, frogs, and dark colored plastics.

Crappie are being caught in small numbers in Boat Dock Cove. They prefer cover and are most often caught using finger jigs or live golden shiners. They bite best in the predawn hours.

Each month Whopper Contest winners in four categories are awarded a free fishing and boating permit. For information on the contest or fishing conditions, please contact the Ranger Station at (760) 839-4346.
