Going deep for Shasta trout!
9-4-2018
Jeff Goodwin
Back on Shasta Lake today with Jim and Dick from Redding, Ca. Things have really slowed down for most on Shasta, but there are some great fish still to be had. We dropped down into the dark depths of Shasta Lake to get our fish today. We put in a full day, but the guys took home a nice big bag of fresh rainbows for the bbq. We hit a couple of line peelers today, but couldnt get the big fish of the day to the net before it pulled loose from the Bay Rat long shallow stick bait I had at 85'. Most of our trout came from 100' and most were eating the Bay Rats. Water temps have cooled off and we're seeing surface temps of 76 deg's. The water temps at 100' are right about 60 deg's which will definitely hold summer rainbows. We have about 3 weeks of prdeictable fishing until the Shasta Lake makes a turn towards fall. Its already headed that direction, but the summer pattern is still holding on for now. I'm bouncing back and forth from river salmon to lake trout until the end of October when my salmon season will come to an end. In November we will be back chasing trophy browns with Optimizer spoons!
