Permit and Boat Rentals are sold at the Ranger Station. At present, we do not sell fishing licenses, bait, or tackle, so anglers must acquire these essential items elsewhere prior to their visit. All day motor boats are discounted to $20 for seniors on Tuesday and Thursdays and for active military every Saturday.
Due to the threat of Quagga mussels, there is a ban on private water craft and equipment. Restricted equipment includes; private boats, canoes, kayaks, float tubes, trolling motors, fish finders, anchors, and other equipment that contacts the water.
The park will close weekdays after Labor Day beginning Tuesday Sept. 4th and re-open for weekday fishing and general recreation in mid-December following the first trout plant, as always, we will remain open on the weekends.
Catfish are being caught throughout the lake. Luis Ramirez of Pala caught a 9.50# catfish on cut mackerel at the west buoys. Lake Wohlford cats prefer cut mackerel or chicken liver.
The bass have been active in tight to shore feeding on the shad. Joe Meyers of Escondido caught and released a 10.60# bass Thursday using a plastic worm in Oakvale Cove. Bass respond well to shad raps, frogs, and dark colored plastics.
Crappie are being caught in Boat Dock Cove and by boaters trolling for them. Crappie prefer cover and are most often caught using finger jigs or live golden shiners.
Each month Whopper Contest winners in four categories are awarded a free fishing and boating permit. For information on the contest or fishing conditions, please contact the Ranger Station at (760) 839-4346.
