Mucho fish throughout the day teased and taunted anglers but sparingly gave up the goods. Yesterday’s position “alpha” became today’s heel as we struggled to maintain consistency amidst the ocean of tuna surrounding our position. Go figure. Why one day to the next a mere quarter mile or less makes that much of a difference to a free ranging tuna is a question that has vexed many a fisherman. And will continue to do so far beyond our blink in time.

Despite not having the full favor of these tuna we managed to scratch out a day through sheer effort at the rail. Sound familiar? It is a theme that I have supported in action and words for my entire career. Far from unique in practice and understanding it is simply a “how to” formula of success. Time at the rail reliably translates into results in the hatch. No amount of anything other than *@#! house luck trumps that maxim. And we all know how consistent that is.

Beyond the catching one can not imagine a more sublime set of conditions to work in. Flat calm - lake like with zero swell or seas, made for a day of relaxing comfort as anglers practiced their craft at the rail. Then, when the day was done, the tranquil calm did wonders for those same anglers that logged many a long hour at the rail. Heavenly best described.

Less a finer destination here we remain hoping for a little better production tomorrow and beyond. For the families and friends following our voyage from afar rest assured that we are keeping close watch on the brewing tempest Hurricane John way down below. Currently heading our way there is a small chance that we’ll see some peripheral effects out here on Thursday. If the forecast changes at all we’ll be long gone before even those conditions arrive.

Photo today features master angler and Izorline representative on this voyage Tom Kurata with one of his several “stock” 50 pound class yellowfin landed here today. I’m not quite sure if one can consider it lucky in the end but this fish dodged a shark flying out of the water in the final moments of his battle with Tom in a “Shark Week” quality display now indelible in the mind of all witnesses, me being one of them. Intense is an understatement. Wow.
