Glory Hole Fishing Report

Glory Hole Sports
New Melones Lake level has dropped 5.50 ft. the last two weeks, currently at 1052.10 ft. and 35.90 ft. from full. With the large water releases, snow melt from the Sierras cannot keep up with current demands. Water temperature across the lake is 68-70 degrees. Water clarity is clear. We have a slight chance of rain on May 25 with temps from Friday to Monday 68d. to 90d, and a slight breeze, perfect weather for the Memorial day weekend.
We like to promote catch and release on New Melones. If you do so, provide us a picture and bring it in for a copy or email it to us at gloryholesports@yahoo.com so we can put it on the board or in the newsletter.
Anglers FYI: For anyone with a potential lake record please call us at the store and hopefully we can send someone to weigh, photograph and measure the catch at the lake. GHS is the unofficial recorder of lake records for New Melones, and we understand there is sometimes conflicting interest in the welfare of the catch, whether or not to release the potential record, sacrificing your place as a record holder for the lake.
We do promote catch and release. For potential lake records, record the statistics of the fish... length, girth, weight and photographed at the lake before releasing her. If indeed we can verify the information that is provided, such as a witness, comparing the scale used with ours, a photograph with the fish hanging from the scale and can see the scale weight, etc...then we can accept this as proof. If your catch has expired than indeed bring it in to GHS so we can record it here, and you can have it mounted!
TROUT
13 year old Austin Johnson strolled into Glory Hole Sports with the biggest smile on his face after showing his dad how its done on New Melones Lake with these two beautiful rainbow trout (pictured above) weighing in at 3 lbs. 8 oz., and 12 lbs. They reported they were trolling the main lake 40 ft. deep with a orange wedding ring, same colored dodger and a dab of garlic scent. Congratulations on a fantastic catch.
Grover and crew were out having an awesome day May 18, hauling in a limit of browns and bows all weighing between 5.3 and 6 lb.9 oz. These anglers reported fishing by the bridge in the afternoon, rolling shad, with a dodger.
The trout bite on New Melones has been steady with average weights of 5 lbs. being caught using orange, pink hoochies, silver rapala's, rainbow colored speedy shiners.
KOKANEE
A few Kokanee have been brought in this week, nothing large but they are steadily increasing in numbers. Chuck Newcomb of Manteca landed a jackpot of trout, kokanee, bass and crappie fishing by the spillway. Chuck landed the kokanee using a pink Uncle Larry's Spinner with a rainbow dodger topped with Kokanee Special Procure scent.
BASS
New Melones Lake is a haven for bass the last couple months with anglers reporting daily outings where they are landing 40 + bass. Top water action has been improving using River2sea baits. Ned rigs have been very productive off the bottom.
CATFISH
No reports of Catfish caught this week but with water temps on the rise look for the bite to pick up.
CRAPPIE
The sunfish continues to be caught and are giving anglers some fun times on the water. Also some nice Bluegill have been landed. By far the most popular bait has been using live medium shiners and crappie jigs.
The fishing has picked up a bit at New Melones Lake with this warmer weather. The main Lake and the 49 bridge is where we had our luck last week landing two big bows 4 lbs and 5lbs 10oz down around 34' we also landed some smaller 13" bows.
This is the first week that the water temperature has reached 70 degrees and with that we are starting to more Shad hitting the surface in open water.
The best news I have for ya, I had some friends fish on Sat. they fished a long day but it payed. They caught and released two big browns at 60' rolling Shad, 8 big bows to 6lbs and one 13" Kokanee between 45 to 55 feet using different colored dodgers and Paulina Peak Wickiup Spinner Hoochies. ( I saw the pictures) That's a great day of fishing on New Melones. All the fish were caught on the main Lake.
