Bill Roecker
The best fish eligible for the jackpot was a 43.8-pound yellowfin tuna, the first of the season from Guadalupe Island, caught by Ron Volmer of Hermosa Beach. You could say Ron played it by the book with his tackle, using a 4/0 Eagle Claw circle hook, 40-pound Yo-Zuri pink fluorocarbon leader on 40-pound Izorline and 65-pound Line One Spectra. He said he fished with a Tiburon reel and a Calstar 700 M rod, beating his prize in a bit over ten minutes. A biiger tuna was lost, and skipper Toussaint said he saw good sign of big yellowfin at the island.
"They were blowing out," he noted.
"There were a lot of iron fish, yellowtail, on the bank," said Ron. "It looked to me that the Salas 7X and the 6X Jr. were working very well, in mint, sardine green or scrambled eggs colors."
