Folsom Lake Fishing Report

RB Bass

Water temp 50 to 52. Winds were calm to a slight breeze. Air temp was low to mid 50’s.

I got out on the lake at 10am. I had just made some adjustments to the boat and checked them out first, all good. I also wanted to approach the lake differently than I normally do. I know plenty of spots that have produced well for me in the past and sometimes count on them a bit more than I should. The day after Thanksgiving I spent the day out in a friendly competition and didn’t get bit, while friend at the back of the boat caught all the fish!

So that morning I put my graphs to work. I used my charts and checked high spots on the main body of the lake. I used my side imaging checking closer to the bank and around points. I did this about an hour and started to fish an island top that had about 8′ on top of it and tapered out slowly. On one end there was a rock pile in 30′ of water. There was some bait on the opposite side of the island in 18′ down to 25′. The fish were about 30 yards away from the bait sitting just off the bottom from 25′ to 30′

I limited what I brought out. When not in a tournament I love enjoy light action rods and 6lb test! I threw some 1/8 oz. homemade jigs at them for a little bit. They usually smash these brown/purple little buggers, but not today. I started split shotting a green pumpkin 5″ worm and they liked that. I was very surprised at how aggressive the bites I got were. No guessing involved, there was a solid thump and it was game on! Nice no brainer action, which suits me very well.

I found 3 different areas that held fish. One of the a very defined school and the 3 I got were all largemouth, not big, but not lethargic at all. The first one around 2lbs that leaped right out of the water! Lot’s of fun on light line and a light action rod!

One thing that day, I was only able to get the fish one at a time. After I got one, they didn’t bite again until I left and then came back later. Luckily 2 of the areas were in sight of each other and the other was only a 10 minute boat ride. Cruising the boat on a beautiful winter day is half of the fun for me. It’s always great to be able to take a day off for some stress relief, catch a few fish and enjoy the beauty we are blessed with.

Don’t forget to visit Monsterfishingtackle.com for your fishing needs. My rig was really simple. I used some bobber stoppers in front of and behind a Mojo weight with about 18″s of line between it and a 2/0 Gamakatsu red EWG hook. Not sure where the worms came from, but they were hand pours that were very soft. The fish on Folsom seem to love garlic, so a dip of the tail in some chartreuse garlic scented dye surly wont hurt…

Hope this may help someone and I’ll see you out on the water!
