SFR CORAL SEA CHARTER

6-6-2008
Don Padick

The SFR charter on Captain Randy Kramer's Coral Sea set sail despite high winds and rough seas at the outer islands. We departed at 4 am instead on 10 pm the night before to allow the winds to settle down a bit. We headed to Santa Cruz Island and fished the kelp beds in search of some white seabass, calicos or halibut. We caught 2 out of 3 target species, with some nice calicos and a big halibut hitting the sacks. The seabass are there, like right under the boat there, but getting them to bite was another story. We hit some rockfish spots in the late morning and early afternoon before heading back to the kelp beds to watch more huge schools of seabass swim right by the boat. Captain Kramer kept us on the water late trying to get some of the WSB to bite, but it just wasn't to be. Dirk's big halibut won the jackpot earning him a nice gift certificate from Bob's Sporting Goods and some thick halibut fillets for the barbeque. All and all a great day on the water. Thanks again to Captain Kramer and the crew of the Coral Sea for another great trip.
