Not Exactly Two 300-Pounders?Ķ

Trusting memory, I recently said that Jerry Brown had caught two 300-pound tuna on the same trip. In order to settle the Internet buzz my remarks started, here's what Jerry said, and a photo of him with the late Rollo Heyn, in a shot I took at Fisherman's Landing.

"I am pleased to be able to go fishing again for 17 days on the Royal Polaris leaving 20 April. I hope the fishing stays as good as your recent reports," said Jerry in a recent email.

"Just a short note to correct your written impression about the source of JB Line One Braided Spectra. It is, and always has been, made in the continental USA. The Spectra is US made and the braiding is also done in the USA."

Yesterday Brown sent a second email:

"Two 300 pounders in one trip is a bit of fisherman's exaggeration. Two fish totaling 600lbs in 48 hrs is true. Enclosed is a photograph that you took in Dec 1996, one of the last photos of Rollo with big fish I imagine.

"One fish was 312 pounds, the other was 288 at weigh in, total 600 lbs. The 288 was caught at San Benedicto but lay on the hot deck of the RP in the sun for many hours because another fisherman was lost in the skiff with no working radio after being towed away by a huge Manta Ray. Everyone, (including me) was preoccupied with trying to spot the skiff, everyone fearing the worst.

"Much later in attempts to save the fish for weigh-in, the large scad bait and other stuff were washed out with the hose to cool off the fish which was baked for four hours. In the view of Rollo and others, it was truly a 300# fish hence the story. Oh yes, Bill was finally found safe.

"On another famous trip to Clipperton on which four 300 pounders were caught, one of which was mine, I also caught another large fish but I have forgotten the exact weight but it also was just under 300. There were so many big ones, no one took notice of 290 pounders."
