Pyramid Lake

The fishing has really picked up. A few good storms and cooler nights have the baitfish dispersed and the trout on the hunt. We have seen larger fish begun to show up with more frequency and more than willing to eat a fly.

Surprisingly the indicator bite has been strong the past few weeks. Balanced Leech have been the top producers, certainly not to take anything away from sinking lines and subsurface flies. Boobies and Bugger patterns will catch a lot of fish.

Can’t really look for birds and baitfish as much now with everything continuing to cool. Find a beach and stay at it at least a solid hour before moving on. And the old saying “don’t leave fish to find fish” could be more accurate now. Keep your flies in the water and you will be rewarded.

Southern beaches have been most productive lately.

Flies: Cat Whisker and Spanish Olive Boobies, Midnight Cowboy, Red Spark Plug, Black Pilot Nymph, Balanced Leech peacock and white, Moo Minnow

Main Truckee River – (between the Little Truckee Confluence and downtown Reno)

The recent storms, cool nights and our Indian Summer weather has made this an amazing fall to be on the Truckee River and the tributaries. Both California and Nevada sides are fishing well. Streamers and nymphs are the most reliable but if you catch the right conditions you might be lucky find a few noses poking up to eat hatching mayflies and midge.

CURRENT TRUCKEE RIVER FLOWS AT FARAD GAGE (NEAR FLORISTON)

Flies: Skipper Stone, Dead Drift Crayfish, Jigged Red Butt, Jigged Assassin, Bunny Leech olive and the Weir’s Sculpin.

UPCOMING FLY TYING CLASSES

We have started our Winter Fly Tying Classes. If you are interested in learning to tie your own flies or sharpen up your skills we will have frequent classes over the course of the coming months.

For the next month we are going to have our guides show you how to tie their favorite patterns for fishing both Pyramid Lake and the Truckee River.

Mike Anderson our Pyramid Lake guide will focus on Pyramid flies and beginner techniques to begin filling your box with ammo for the coming season. Mike will cover all of the basics of fly tying, tool use and material selection. You will go away with several flies that you will be able to chase the giant trout of Pyramid Lake.

Learn intermediate and advanced fly tying techniques from Reno Fly Shop head guide and instructor, Mike Curtis. Mike will show you the flies he ties for his clients and himself when he fishing our local waters. He has years of experience fly fishing, tying and guiding the Truckee River and its tributaries.
