Horseshoe Lake Report

11-4-2016
East Bay Regional Park District

There has been a positive test for blue-green algae in and around the swimming area. Park visitors should be watchful of their dogs, taking care that they do not contact the water. Currently our boat ramp and fishing pier are both open.

PLEASE REMEMBER THAT YOU MUST BE 100 FEET AWAY FROM THE FISH TUBE, THE BOAT DOCK, AND THE BEACH AREA while fishing from the shore and from a boat. Also, note that the use of lead fishing tackle is prohibited at Quarry Lakes. You can exchange lead tackle at the kiosk in a “1 for 1” trade for stainless steel weights.

GENERAL CONDITIONS

The weather has been cooling. There has been a good bit of rain as well as some windy days. The ACWD has turned on the water pumps, so water is coming in from Alameda Creek. The water level is on the rise, with some days raising up about a foot!

CATFISH

Catfish are still being caught. Catfish have been caught all over Horseshoe both trolling and shore fishing. Many are taking trout bait and going after smaller spoons.

TROUT

The trout bite has been fairly consistent this past week. The trout being caught are QUALITY! Most reported trout have been 2+ lb. with some getting up to 5 and 6 lbs. Anglers have had luck with chartreuse Power bait, Power bait mousetails, as well as night crawlers. Great spots to start would be fisherman’s row, the point on the peninsula, or the old boat ramp. But remember to be flexible, the trout are moving around quite a bit.

BASS

Bass bite has been fairly slow. Not too many anglers have reported catches, but Rainbow Lake would be your best bet for finding a few bass.

CATCHES REPORTED

Randy Estrada from Milpitas caught this monster 11lb catfish to the left of the swim beach on mousetails. He landed this on 4lb test line!

Vincent Cortez and his friend Josh caught eight trout to the left of the swim beach on kastmasters. The two largest (pictured here) weighed in at 6lb 12oz, and 6lb 10oz.

Francisco Ramos of Mt. View caught 3 catfish totaling 10lb 10oz near the cactus garden on the backside of horseshoe. (No picture. Oct. 29th 2016)
