Smith River Steelhead Report 02-20-2008

2-20-2008
Dave Jacobs

Steelhead fishing on the Smith River has continued to be slow this past week with daily catch rates very low for this time of year. Fishing pressure has been very light for February and one to two steelhead a day with a few zero's mixed in seemed to be the norm. Many angler's have moved to other North coast river systems to seek out better steelheading. Rain has returned to the North coast's Smith River with river levels favorable for both the bank and drift boat angler's. Steelhead have averaged 8 to 12 pounds with steelhead in the mid to high teen's or even the low twenty pound class a real possibility on the Smith River. Side drifting natural cured roe and a Quickie puffball or various glo bug yarn combo's and Quickie puffball's have produced most hook-ups. Back trolling Hot shots and Brad's wiggler's in various color combo's has also been a good go to technique. Both Mark Mulliner of Corning, Ca. and Stan Salonius of Bella Vista, Ca. both caught a few nice steelhead while out with Professional guide service's Dave Jacobs. Stan weighed in this week's biggest steelhead, a 15 pound steelhead. Both chrome bright and run back steelhead have come in this past week. John Adams and 11 year old grandson Spencer Adams caught and released quite a few fresh steelhead this past week with Spencer's biggest steelhead weighing in at 10 pounds while out with guide Dave Jacobs. Flows at the time of this report are 9.57 feet at the Jed Smith gauge and expected to slightly rise and fall for the rest of the week. Angler's should call ahead as river conditions can change quickly on the Smith River.
