January Fishing Newsletter

What a month for Marlin, they have just been everywhere and on an aggressive bite. We have had them right on the transom chewing our teasers and waiting to have a bait dropped back to them with there mouth open like a stupid sailfish would do.

On January 15,16, and 17th, I hosted a trip to Golfito with Randy and Katie Lightburn and good friends, Gary and Levi, from Seattle, Washington. We fished with world record holder, Captain Bobby McGuiness and mates Erwin and Esteban. On the first two days we raised 2 marlin to the teaser but no success, as we are trying to hook it up with a fly rod. Then on the 3rd day Levi was up and in came another estimated 350 lbs right to the transom and Estaban pitched a bait right down his throat 15' from the transom as we all watched. Levi at 26 years of age and in good shape took him on as if he had done this several times before. We did have two other sailfish on at the same time with him and so we had to break them off and go after the Marlin. The fish put on a great show and I managed to get 20+ great photos. We also landed 4 Sailfish and 6 Dorado earlier that day so the Marlin just made a great trip out of it?Ķ
