Convict Lake Fishing Report

Convict Lake Staff
Since Salmon Eggs were one of the hot baits the past two weeks, I thought I'd recap a summary from one of last year's reports. We typically always stock four types of Balls o Fire eggs from Pautzke Bait Company at the Convict Lake General Store. The Green Label is Pautzke's original and is probably the most common to anglers. The size of the eggs may vary slightly in each jar. The Premium or "Red Label" is very similar to the Green Label but they are larger eggs and are uniform in size. There are no fragments in the jar. Due to the fact the Premium egg is larger than our Green Label egg you'll only need to put one on the Salmon Egg hook, instead of two in most cases with the Green Label. Two other popular types we carry at the general store are the Gold and Silver Label. The Gold Label is a combination of the Premium egg but with gold glitter. The Silver Label is a combination of Green Label egg but with silver glitter. The glitter will help with added flash to attract and deceive larger trout. The final two types are new for us. They are the Yellow Jacket and the Chartreuse Garlic. Their names give away their descriptions.
Catch of the Week: This weeks "Catch of the Week" was a 3 pound 3 ounce Rainbow. Greg Trnavsky from Oak Park, CA caught this lunker with a Gold Needlefish from the South Shore.
Other notable catches this week:
Hudson Perrenoud of Murrietta, CA with two beauties from the Inlet. The larger was 2 pounds 10 ounces and the second was 1 pound 12 ounces. Both were caught with Salmon Eggs.
The Perrenoud family with another great catch. Nick Perrenoud landed a 2 pound 9 ounce Rainbow. He was fishing with an unknown lure at Hangman's Tree.
Marie Sadd of Sierra Madre, CA hooked into a 2 pound 8 ounce Rainbow using a Nightcrawler. She was fishing along the South Shore.
Mark Erickson of Fallbrook, CA caught this 2 pound 8 ounce Rainbow while fishing the South Shore. He was drowning a Nightcrawler when he landed this nice Rainbow.
Tactics/Bait: A variety of different baits and lures were hooking fish all week. Some of the nicer fish were caught with Mice Tails (Pink or Red are always successful colors), Powerbait, Nightcrawlers, Gulp Worms, Salmon Eggs and trolling Needlefish. The most successful Powerbait colors were Yellow, Rainbow and Green. Don't forget to use some type of added attractant. Pro-Cure, Bait-On, Lip Ripperz and Berkley all make excellent attractants, which are sold at the general store. The South Shore was the hottest spots this week. Other locations fishing well were the Inlet, North Shore, the Handicap Pier and Hangman's Tree.
Here is a list of other baits/lures that can be productive: Panther Martins, Tasmanian Devils, green or brown Marvel Fly Lures, Kastmasters, NeedleFish, Roostertails, and garlic scent on Powerbait.
Here is a list of recommended flies:
Dry Flies: Adams, Female Adams, Cutter's Caddis, Elk Hair Caddis, Stimulators, Black/Red Ants, Sierra Bright Dot, Royal Coachman and Hoppers.
Streamers: Wooly Bugger (black, brown, olive, or green), Mutuka (black, brown, olive, or green), Hornberg, and Muddler Minnows.
Wet Flies(Nymphs): Prince Nymph, Flashback Pheasant Tail, Hare's Ear, Zebra Midge (red and black), Copper John (red and copper) and San Juan Worm (brown or red).
Other Resources: View our Convict Lake Fishing Map and Fishing Rig Suggestion brochures. Both brochures are available in the General Store.
