"Keep Your Eye On The Water"
Roy Rose parked the Royal Polaris at Fisherman's Landing February 6 after a 17-day trip with 18 anglers. There were five cows aboard the boat, along with a good catch of tuna and a half-dozen wahoo per angler.
"We took the tour," said Roy, "from the southern banks to the Hurricane Bank. We got bigger fish on sardines, but we also got a few big ones on the kite and flying fish or squid."
Chris Petersen's best tuna ever weighed 269 pounds on the boat, where the weigh-in was done, and he won first place.
"I saw him in the chunk line," said Chris, "and cast to him. Next thing I knew we were dancin'. It just goes to show, you keep your eye on the water and you'll something.
"I fought him for an hour, " continued Chris, "and he took over 500 yards of Spectra with 25 pounds of drag."
Chris fished a sardine on a 6/0 Super Mutu ringed hook tied to 130-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon tied to 130-pound Izorline Spectra. He used a Penn 50 S reel modified by Cal Sheets and a Calstar 665 M rod.
Steve Oba of Brea was second, for a 210-pounder Oba bagged it with a sardine on a 7/0 ringed Super Mutu hook on 130-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon and 130-pound Line One Spectra. He fished with a Penn 50 S reel and a Calstar 6460 XH rod, and cranked his winner to the boat in just 20 minutes.
Karl Fechner of Palos Verdes won third place for a 186-pound tuna. He said he got it with a sardine on a 6/0 ringed Super Mutu tied to 90-pound Momoi line and 130-pound Line One Spectra, on a Penn 50 S reel and a Calstar 660 XXH rod.
