Weather: - (7am Temp First light/Last light)
Sunday 43º 5:35/8:22 Clear and cooler Monday 41º 5:36/8:21 Clear and cool but warmed up nicely Tuesday 44º 5:37/8:19 Clear and cool but warmed up nicely Wednesday 47º 5:38/8:18 Clear and warm Thursday 49º 5:39/8:17 Clear with a few white billowy clouds moving through Friday 48º 5:40/8:17 Clear and warm with a light breeze. Saturday 44º :41/8:14 Clear and cooler but reached 82 degrees Again the week started out much cooler with the first burn of the fall which will cause the aspens to start their annual color change. CalTrans is still repairing the remainder of the rock fall project that started last summer. Barriers are up and chain link fencing is being installed above the barriers to complete the rock fall project and hopefully it won't go into the fall color change.
The stock truck arrived Monday with 500 pounds including trophies. Trumble and Big Virginia also got stocked including trophies.
BAIT: Night crawlers have dominated the number one spot this summer so far. Orange glitter and pink mice tails, pink power-worm, pink glitter powerbait, yellow glitter garlic powerbait, and salmon peach are also taking a lot of trout. Salmon eggs on size 14-16 red egg hooks are also doing well. For the best action on a mice tail use the new light wire hooks by Owner called Mosquito hooks and be sure and ask how to hook the mice tails for the best results.
LURES: The best action was on red/gold Buoyant's, gold Super Duper's 501, Kastmasters and small copper Buoyant's, Small gold spoons, small copper spoons; trout trap grasshopper, and Tasmanian Devil's. Always try all your favorite hardware until the fish find the "action" they are looking for. Remember to use the lure properly by adding the right swivel for the best action. Not much change here.
FLY AND BUBBLE: Lots of dry fly action early when the water surface warms, so try green body California Mosquito and Grey Hackle yellow size 14, damsels, hoppers and black ants. Also try Black Gnat parachute #14, tent-wing caddis, Cowdung #14 (small wooly olive body with a light rust hackle, if you tie), and Adams Female #14.
Best action is ALWAYS when their is a chop on the water which is usually late afternoon to legal limit at night.
FLY RODS: Green flashy woolly bugger (un-weighted and no bead) Virginia Lakes special, Blue Damsel's, poxy-back Callibaetis, black woolly buggers, red throat olive Matuka's, olive Hornberg's, cluster midges, Black gnats, Black Gnat parachute size 14 and skinny stillwater nymph. If you tie your own flies, make sure you use less material than normal for high elevation waters, trout are still taking un-weighted olive woolly buggers but it will be tough unless you are using a full-sink line with a 2 fly set-up and of course a slight breeze will always improve your catch rate.
FLY TYERS: If you wish to improve your catch rate, tie your flies more on the minimal side meaning less body material on your dry flies, and also on your sub-surface patterns like emergers.
BACKCOUNTRY: Fly fishing with a bubble or a short fly rod using small gnats, mosquitoes, small royal humpy, black ants, hoppers, and green body mosquitoes sizes 16-18. Use larger flies as the weather cools. Lure angler action has been good on small gold Super Duper's, gold Mepps size O, and very small gold spoons. Early morning and early evening are the best times for any action. This is pretty consistent for the canyon. Come and ask me what's hot.
Please keep only what you can eat, it is a valuable resource. Also, If the trout bleeds, it's yours, PLEASE don't toss it back into the lake as it will die. If you care about the resource please be careful when releasing fish back into the lake. Also, IT ATTRACKS BEARS!
