CALIFORNIA FREE FISHING DAY IS JULY 2nd!
This means you don't need a license for ONE rod per person.. and ALL other laws must be obeyed. Have a great time! Have you seen how the rivers have started to slow down? We're not through with the run-off quite yet, due to the cool temps we got last week and now a bump with higher temps.. but we're close! Historically, average run-off ebbs June 20th.. so we've only got a couple more weeks of this to go. Some rivers are looking pretty good; like the West Carson and the Truckee. Watch for the river color to turn a greenish color. That tells us that the dissolved solids that have been whirling around are settling down and the fish typically are ready to start eating in earnest. With all this water, be sure to stock up on your DEET/mosquito repellent.

E. CARSON: CA: Flows: average 525 cfs this week, just at median flow. Above Hangman's (along hwy 89/4) It's still a little high, and slightly clearing, there was a stocking a week ago, and a few were put in, more will be in for the July 4th Holiday. . Just remember, that’s all snow melt, slow your rig down with some weight. Dry fly action... not j...u...s...t.. yet! Alpine County will most likely throw a batch in this week.. Catch & Release section (downstream at Hangman's Bridge) , Like the water above, it's running still a little high and it's cold. Rafting will start to ebb greatly. If you HAVE to fish there, Go Deep or Go Home.. long , long leaders, heavy split shots and raise that strike indicator to slow the rig down. Watch for pesky snakes with the heat in the lower sections.

E. CARSON: NV: Flows average: 600 cfs, average median. Slowing down, we've got a bit more water coming down on the Nevada side than the CA side due to Bryant Creek. The water is cold, not really crossable, so pick your side. Drift Red Copper Johns, Golden stones, little yellpw stones, zebra midges, or San Juans. You MIGHT be able to pick up on dry fly, make it a stimulator or grasshopper (don't forget a dropper of a midge pattern!

W. CARSON: Flows average: 121 cfs, running median flows It sure is pretty looking! Was stocked last week across from Hope Valley Campground, those fish have pretty much been dinner. You might take a walk away from where the crowds are. A note, if you pick up a wild trout, please let it go, If using bait, just cut the line, no longer are viable trout being stocked. Dries: Elk Hair Caddis, Stimulator , Stone, adams in a 16, Pale Morning Dun mayfly size 14. Nymphs: Hare's ear, PT, Prince nymph (always a go-to!), zebra midges, WD-40.

PLEASANT VALLEY CREEK Flows 120 cfs Private water. Buggers dead drifted and stripped.. Olive produced well, snow cones, caddis pupa, PT's Hot Pink san Juans.. and heck, throw a big ugly!. Hoppers did well for clients with guides. If interested in fishing the only Private water in Alpine County, call the shop for your reservation!! E. WALKER: NV (Rosaschi Ranch): Flows 235 cfs: Median flows. CATCH & RELEASE, NO BAIT, BARBLESS NO KILL. Pick your side and be careful if you have to cross. Dead drift light colored buggers (light olive, white),natural zonkers, clousers, copper johns, hare's ear, rubber legged stones, little yellow stones, red or black zebra midges, bubbleback midges, Hot Pink bugger, Tequila twist. Guides available.

E. WALKER: CA Flows 230 cfs, median flows: CATCH & RELEASE NO BAIT, BARBLESS (Special Regulations)Flows have been steady. The head wall did have some nice fish in it, again, pick your side. Buggers, PT,s Chrino's , and midge on a heavy rig. Damsels are coming off with this heat and a damsel nymph is a good one to have on your rig. A good idea is to get the CLEAR glow in the dark Thingamabobbers, you'll get use to finding it. The fish won't move off it as easily. Nymphs they weren't too picky about, ADD, ADHD, black brassies, nitro caddis, bubble back, hare's ear. It is fishing very well.

E. WALKER: NV ELBOW AREA Flows 235 cfs stocked a month ago. PT's Hare's ear, stone, Micro Mayfly, san juans. Dries: Stimi's in yellow, hoppers, PMD's.

WEST WALKER : CA: Flows average: 700 Flows dropped well after the cool down, but still high and muddy. It will take a few more weeks before we're down on this one in the Canyon. Check the Pickel Meadows area for a little less flow. (REMINDER: Release the Browns, if you want to see one in the future!)

WEST WALKER NV WILSON CANYON: NDOW stocked it a few weeks ago, flows are running around 400 cfs. Water is fairly clear. Throw a hopper (tan) or a red wing) and a drop of a red copper john or black zebra midge or a ADHD. (HOYE CANYON): Hoye Canyon is no longer open to the public. Only fishing on the West Walker River, Nevada, access is Wilson Canyon on 208 south of Yerington.

HOBART It is a GOOD season so far, like it was last year! NDOW was nice enough to throw some more tiger trout in last week. The southern entrance had a snow drift across it a few weeks ago, and the rains melted it away. Damsels, PT's zebra midges, red or black, mosquito's, black ants. For Directions for a 4 x 4 vehicle: http://www.ndow.org/Bodies_Of_Water... PYRAMID LAKE Closes the end of this month. North beaches like Wizard or Monument. Buggers and beetles. It certainly has slowed down from spawn. If the wind is up, put on the strike indicator and snow cones! TOPAZ: Topaz Lake is now the highest it's been in over 4 years. The bass are starting to show up, buggers, dead drift cray fish. Trout are trying to stay out of the cold muddy water coming in from the inlet canal. THE CARP started showing up in the shallows! for some carp fishing (if you haven't done carp fishing, come in and ask.. it's a hoot!) Olive buggers, damsel nymphs, Carp flies, crayfish patterns and a very stout 8 weight rod. If fishing the LAKE of Topaz, a CA (OR) an NV.. if you turn to do the outlet (Topaz Canal) you must have a NV license. As is, turning to the inlet, you would have to have a CA license. Be informed the Canal area is now marked NO Trespassing about 2 miles from head wall (It is private property).

SPOONER: NDOW has stocked it last week. Damsels, zebra midges, copper johns, PT's buggers in white, olive, zug bugs, princes. If you see lips: Para Adams, Trico.

DESERT CREEK: Running pretty good and cool. Received a very good stocking about a month ago and again last week. Buggers, hoppers, ants, caddis, little yellow stones.

HEENAN: Closed until September.

INDIAN CREEK: Good water and was stocked by CDW with small LCT's. Along with a stocking from Alpine County for the Kids Derby. It's slowed down a bit since last week's cool down. But the fish are there. Finger crawl your nymphs. Buggers in olive, black and white. Zebra midges, hares' ear, damsels, sheep creek specials.

BURNSIDE LAKE Have not received a report.

KIRMAN: It's still a bit low. We may have lost fish due to last year's low water and then a Winter kill. A few fish have been caught. Watch for rattle snakes on the way up and out. Scuds, zugs, damsels, olive buggers, chrino's to the weed beds.

TRUCKEE: Flows in Mogul are about 364 – 313 cfs average. Fishing pretty well on the California side Honestly lots of bugs on the river. You can't go wrong. Caddis, PMD, midges, stoneflies, craws, drakes. . And up higher on the NV side. Stones, Green Drake nymphs (Olive hare's ear, in a pinch) San Juans , Rainbow warriors. If you're adventurous, throw a big ugly Rabbit strip fly to clean up a run or hole. It was hit pretty hard with 2 years of hard drought and really warm water temps. There are some survivors and that's good. If we want the repopulation of brown trout to be there, let them go (tell your spin or bait buddies) FWS dumped in a big load of Little LCT's.. good fodder for the browns and big 'bows.

BRIDGEPORT RES.: Fishing is awesome. Lots of fish and Mone County BPFHP has also put some fish in. I’d suggest renting a boat if you don’t have a float tube. start hitting the old Creek channels of Robinson and Buckeye that are now covered in water. Rainbow point has been reporting well also. Olive or tan buggers have been the ticket, an intermediate sink line for now, when hte heat comes on start using a type IV. Midging, midging midging.. keep it small 16 - 20 black, bi (black/red), red, and lavender. Carp are in the shallow grass if you want to target one of the hardest fish to catch on a fly.
