Hi friends. Tough day for us on the offshore grounds, well, that's not entirely true. First thing in the morning, we picked up a handful of Bluefin on the drift and it took us a long while until we jigged up a couple of Yellowfin tuna after lunch-time. In all honesty, that was pretty much our day for a long time. We never got on a school in the morning and we were constantly searching from that point on, going almost the entire day without seeing much of anything. In the afternoon, the task of locating a school became much more difficult as the entire fleet left to either go home or continue on their routes south-bound. Easy to forget what an enormous ocean this here Eastern Pacific is when you're the only boat in the area.

With zero help in locating where the school would pop up, it was looking pretty bleak with the sun beginning to sink towards the horizon. Towards the very end of the day, we jigged up a couple more Yellowfin's and then we saw a small spot of crashing Bluefin and managed to capture a quick handful of those short-finned beauties. Upon leaving the stop, we had one jig already in the water when we got a troll stop and for whatever reason, the fish decided to show up. We ended the day on a steady plunker bite with three to five fish going all the way until dark. The mix favored the Bluefin side of the coin but we also managed some nice Yellowfin tuna to add to our box. So thank goodness for our little day-saver of a stop because without our last flurry, it was a long, windy, and tough day of things. Just goes to show you that you've got to remain positive, always be ready, and that it's never over, until it's over. Cliche? Most definitely, but we like to think of it as "glass half-full" thinking and on this day, a good ole' cliche was all we had to fall back on for a while. Nonetheless, we managed to have a decent score at the end of the day and we're drifting on the "sack", hoping for a morning bite tomorrow before we have to boogie for home.

So that is all. The weather is OK, just a little breezy and chilly for our liking. We have a half day to do some work on these tuna-fish and then we'll put a bow on the Garry Roberts 9-day adventure. Wish us luck and happy September.

Hi friends. Short report for this evening as our weather is snotty and we don't have enough tie-down straps to strap my feet to the floor and my fingers to the keyboard. A helmet wouldn't be a bad idea either but we don't have one. Anyhow, offshore prospecting today was OK. We had a few jig strikes on Yellowfin and Dorado and managed a couple stops that produced some bait-fish late in the day but that was about it. Windy...... Read More
