TROUT BITE
Anglers are loving the extended trout season due to the cooler May weather. This weekend, trout were biting in the early morning before 10 a.m. but were best during the late afternoon before sunset. Limits were reported by anglers fishing from boats and the T-dock, as well as, in Cloister Cove after dark.
CATFISH & PANFISH
Thank you to all who came out to our Catfish Season Opener! Many anglers left with Catfish and Trout. Eagle Point, Cloister Cove, and the T-dock produced the most fish. Catfish were hitting on cut mackerel or chicken liver instead of dough baits.
Will the Catfish Record be broken this season? The record is set by Bob Bowden in 2014 with a 71.3 lbs. blue catfish. His bait? A plastic white frog split tail balled together with a small white grub tail onto a treble hook… not the usual tackle for catching a cat, but it worked! Be creative and see if a fish bites!
The bite was on for Panfish this week. Many anglers reported catching Bluegill, Redear, and Crappie. Crappie were biting on minnows from the T-dock.
CATCHES OF THE WEEK
Paul Rusu limited on both Trout and Catfish on Friday night! To make it even sweeter, the last fish he reeled in was an Albino cat! Paul was fishing by boat. Hannah Yakubik reeled in a Bluegill on Sunday from the Campground shoreline.
Brooklyn Steidl of La Mesa caught this Bluegill on a night crawler Sunday morning. She was fishing on the T-dock with her family. Ray and Johnny Gonzalez of El Cajon were fishing by boat off of Eagle Point and reeled in 9 cats! Their bait of choice was cut mackerel. Tabby Reed reeled in a 3 lbs. catfish using chicken liver. She was fishing by boat near Cactus Patch.
From now until Labor Day weekend, night fishing will be every Friday and Saturday night. Make it a weekend affair and reserve a site at the campground!
