Wohlford Lake Staff

Water temperature: At surface 68.00 f., 5.43 D.O. @ 10’ 68.36 f., 5.34D.O.
Water level: Low level, private water craft are currently banned.

To protect Wohlford from invasive exotic Quagga mussels, there is still a ban on private water craft and equipment that could have been exposed to mussels. Restricted equipment includes private boats, canoes, kayaks, float tubes, trolling motors, fish finders, anchors, and other equipment that contacts the water.

Lake Wohlford is offering $20 all day motor boats to seniors on Tuesdays and Thursdays and to active military on the first and third Saturdays of each month.

The bass bite remains strong thanks to the favorable conditions; good water temps, and an abundance of bait fish. Dana Rogers of Valley Center caught and released a 9.90# largemouth he caught on a maroon colored power-worm off Senior Shore. Bass can be found around structure and respond well to crawdads, shad-raps, and dark colored plastics.

The catfish season has officially begun, with the first plant taking place yesterday. The highpoint of the Catfish season should be this year’s Derby. The third annual Wohlford Catfish Derby will be held on Saturday July 2ndwhich also happens to be a free fishing day in the state of California so no license is required on that date. The Derby features prizes for the biggest fish and the park stays open late for night-fishing. It promises to be a great family event so mark your calendars. Catfish can be found throughout the lake and they bite nearly year round. The top baits are chicken liver or cut mackerel.

Crappie are being caught in small numbers. Crappie prefer the cover of shade or overcast conditions and are most often caught on mini-jigs or live golden shiners.

Each month Whopper Contest winners in four categories are awarded a free fishing and boating permit. For information on the contest or fishing conditions, please contact the Ranger Station at (760) 839-4346.
