GENERAL CONDITIONS
The weather has been beautiful with temperatures in the mid 80s and peak temperatures around 93 to 95 degrees. With the weather warming up, this made for some great fishing conditions. Striped Bass, Black Bass and trout are all biting, but the hot bite this past week has been Catfish with many anglers reporting catches. Mt Lassen recently planted 750 lbs. of Rainbow trout, so there are plenty of trout to catch. The water is clear and the lake is full, and that makes for some great fishing.
CATFISH
Catfish are starting to show back up with many people catching these whiskers within the 3-7lb range, and a few anglers got into the 15lbs. range. Some anglers have even reported catching some big ones up to 17 lbs. If you target catfish look for cover, big fallen trees, weed beds, etc. The best bait to use recently has been chicken livers, anchovies or sardines.
TROUT
With the warm water we have, trout have been real slow. If you target them, try to find some deeper water around 15-20 feet, you might also have to venture into the different coves we have as well. The best baits to use have been garlic power bait or nightcrawlers. If you want to use lures, try deeper diving jerkbaits. .
BASS
Black bass are hitting pretty good. Find fallen trees, weed beds or the tulle patches. We would recommend throwing either a weed-less senko, Roboworms, or artificial crawdads on a ½- to a 1-oz football jighead. Anglers are also catching them on shallow to mid running crank baits.
The bass are post spawn, with males and females protecting their babies. If you target and catch a Black Bass, please carefully release them so that they can return to protect their offspring. Staff and public alike want to preserve this popular sportfish for generations to come.
STRIPED BASS
Striped bass are probably your best bet to try and target. Anglers are catching in either Heron Bay in about 20-30 feet of water or near the Dam. The best baits have been chicken liver, anchovies, mackerel or sardines. You can also try catching them on nice sized jerk baits like Lucky Kraft Rat-L Traps or Yo Zuri. We would also recommend jigging for them with either a Hair Raiser or a Chatter bait.
