Lake Sabrina Fishing Report

5-9-2016
Lake Sabrina Boat Landing Staff

Twas another interesting weather week at the Lake – snow, sun, snow, sun, snow, sun, rain and now hopefully, sun for the rest of the week and a bit warmer temps. And may I just say, there are some hard-core fishing fools out there and quite a few were on the Lake over the weekend.

Fishing slowed a tad this week – took a bit more time to get that full stringer. Fishing the Inlet with NightCrawlers or garlic flavored bait was doing the trick though. Another great fishing spot is over across the dam by the spillway or in the bay across from the store or where the natural lakes narrow in the channels – if you’re not sure how exactly to get there or how to set-up, stop in the store and we’ll get you set-up and send you in the right direction. Trolling is also on the slow side, but Michael Spolsky of La Habra landed a nice 2-1/4 pounder on a Wooly Bugger – you may also want to try a Red/Gold Thomas Buoyant. Drift fishing around the rock piles with a NightCrawler has landed a few. Jeff Smith used a NightCrawler-Salmon Egg combo to land a 3-1/2 Rainbow. If you’re a land-lover and fishing from shore try NightCrawlers, Salmon Eggs or PowerBait. Michael Allen landed a 3 pound BROWN from shore using a NightCrawler. Might want to take a bit of a walk and get away from the boat landing. Tyler Volmer, from Palmdale, caught his fist ever lake trout catch – hopefully, he’s hooked!

We still have the Bald Eagle flying over periodically, mostly likes to hang in the back of the Lake. Had some reports of Bear tracks in the snow also at the back of the Lake. Please slow it down on the road coming up from Bishop – there are several herds of Deer moving up from the Valley. Rick saw about 40 together at Intake 2 and I say about 5 down at BitterBrush – take it easy – you might just save your life!

Mule Days starts May 24th – Check out all the fun stuff to do at the Bishop Chamber of Commerce website: www.BishopVisitor.com.

According to the Ranger Station it looks like the Forks, Four Jeffry, Intake 2, Bishop Park, Big Trees and BitterBrush in the Bishop Creek Canyon will be open on April 28th -North Lake, Sabrina Camp and Willow will open around Memorial Day. Bishop Creek Lodge, Creekside RV Park and Cardinal Village Resort will all be opened for Opener. Parchers Resort opens mid-May.

If you’re coming to the Lake, don’t forget sunscreen and dark glasses –the snow and sun makes it pretty bright against the blue sky. DON’T FORGET THAT JACKET.

Finally, it looks like we might be getting some warmer weather. No snow, in the forecast, but we do have a very slight chance of thunderboomers with us for the next few days, but temps look to be in the 60s for the week. The lows are predicted to be in the 30s – maybe Spring is here to stay! You can check out the weather forecast according to Howard our local weather ‘guesser’ at www.MammothWeather.com. You can also check out www.weather.gov – enter Aspendell, CA (which is the little community right below Lake Sabrina) in the search field and you’ll get the forecast for at the higher elevation. You may need to scroll down on the webpage to see the temps.

Rick, Patti and Bryan are back. About mid-May, Len and Ginny will join us along with a new face – Dwayne. With Len and Ginny returning, we start cooking during the week, the week of May 23rd.
