Viva El Nino!

3-9-2016
Doug Neal

Just when it looked like springtime, the weather returned. The return of El Nino is a welcome sight. I was starting to worry...Feb. was mostly dry here. Lake levels are coming up fast as water pours in. Bailey Creek is flowing nicely. The Hamilton Branch is really moving but the water is still a little brown. The North Fork of the Feather River is up and fast, moving cold clear water into the west basin along with several small seasonal inflows on the east side. Mt. Lassen is thick with snow compared to last year. 32 inches more came down last night.

A forecasted 10 day wintery pattern has put the brakes on fishing here so I am not fishing much this week. Wind gusting to 24 mph is just enough to say “Hold Fast”.

Wind and rain in big amounts, it's not worth the risk, save your resources for better weather.

Since Jan 1st we have received close to 15 inches of rain... 3.35 inches in the last 48 hours and 18” of snow with more on the way thru the weekend. Lake levels are noticeably higher.

Prior to this weather resurgence we been trolling the west side of the Almanor Peninsula north of Rec. 2. The bite was still weak just 8 days ago but then began to show signs of a upturn when the sun came out for a week and temps peaked at 62 degrees pushing surface temps to 41.5 degrees.

As we approach winters end, 43 degrees and rising is the number associated with a better bite.
