Dana Wharf Three
7-11-2007
Bill Roecker
Gentlemen won the top spots aboard the Islander's annual Dana Wharf Lady Angler's charter that returned with skipper John Conniff July 11. If that wasn't unusual enough, second-place winner Mark Mayeda of San Clemente won both second and third places.
First place went to Frank Kosi of Newport Beach, for a 33.7-pound longfin. He said it took a sardine on a ringed Super Mutu hook tied to 25-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon leader and 30-pound Big Game line. He used a Torsa 30 reel and a Seeker Black Steel 6465 rod, and decked the fish in five minutes.
"I hooked him on the slide," said Kosi, "in the white water. He was the only bait fish on that stop. Timing is critical when you're fishing on the slide. I was the first one in."
Mark Mayeda of San Clemente won second place for a 32.6-pound albacore, a fish that came on 20-pound line.
