Lots of Nice Fish Being Caught and Released

8-11-2024
Jim Reid

The East is running at about 265 cfs today, it’s been up and down several times this week but hasn’t been much over 300 lately. The water temps have actually come down a few degrees this past week, likely due to the cooler nights we’ve been having as well as the daytime air temps not being as high as they had been. Daytime highs have been mostly in the low 80’s and night time lows have been in the low 50’s and even a couple in the high 40’s. I would still recommend laying off the river during the heat of the day, from around noon to maybe 4 or 5 but before and after that time frame the fishing has been very good. Lots of nice fish in the 15 to 22 inch range have been being caught and released down there. Most of the action has been with nymphs but there’s still some good action with dries and dry/dropper rigs. Some of the patterns that have been successful include: darth baetis, rainbow warrior, perdigon, silver streak, pheasant tail, picky eater, buckskin caddis, Fox’s poopah, z-wing caddis, chubby chernobyl, naked chubby, madam-x, para hopper and dave’s hopper.

Also, some food for thought, in the Fish and Wildlife Departments infinite wisdom they have decided to not make barbless hooks mandatory on the East Walker, this is absolutely going to be detrimental to the life if this amazing river in the future, if you care at all about the East Walker and its sustainability, please pinch your barbs, if everyone adheres to this practice it will help the East Walker River to keep on being a world class fishery. Thanks for your consideration.
