Fish & Trail Report
JUNE 3rd, 2024
--The Big Picture--
The weather is summer, the crowds are as light as mid/week September, fish stocking continues with South Lake now stocked and the hiking conditions are getting significantly better with each passing day. It’s absolutely gorgeous gang, don’t miss a uniquely summer experience with a fraction of the people.
--Weather & Water--
Holy heat lamp Batman - a batch of weather more akin to late July than early June is on the way and it’s going to fill the lakes, clear the trails and open the passes in a hurry. Hot for us is mid 70’s - so it’s gonna be nice up here, but make no mistake, it feels like summer.
SCE has kept Lake Sabrina low thus far so they can complete some maintenance activities prior to their auxiliary spillway project, but the lake is racing up at present / easily up 6ft over the past week.
South Lake is still benefiting from the reservoir storage strategy and is steadily creeping up the launch ramps . The back of the lake is totally accessible and as close to perfect as it can be given the date.
Creek flows are higher on the south fork and lower on the middle fork. In both cases, the fishing access and flows are excellent for angling.
----SLK Launch Ramp Notes----
We still advise a lot of caution when launching private boats since the end of the ramp is still a consideration but most boats can safely launch now.
--Trail Conditions--
Super quiet on the trails overall, but people are indeed coming over the pass almost daily now. These folks are serious thru hikers, not your average weekend hikers, so unless you’re experienced and prepared I’d leave the passes to the die hards for a bit longer.
That said, day hikers are making it up to the first lakes up the trial - Long Lake, Green Lake, Tyee 1 etc. Folks are running across some snow along the way which deters some, but given the forecast and the rate at which the snow is melting, it’s gonna be mushy but short lived obstacle.
--Fishing Reports—
--Lake Sabrina—
It looks a little sad at first glance, but it’s filling fast, there’s no shortage of fish, and access to the main body of the lake and the inlets us good to go. Don’t let the rising water dissuade you, the lake is spectacularly beautiful once you’re out on the water and the fishing is quite good.
HOT SPOTS - inlets, rocky points in channel, trolling natural lake.
WHAT’S WORKING - crawlers, mini jigs in natural colors, garlic PB. buoyants (like always)
Boat reservations can be made NOW at www.lakesabrinaboats.com
Fleet is 8 Motorboats and 4 pontoons - and growing. Ideally the whole fleet is in before Father’s Day.
Private boats can launch off the beach if you know what you're doing.
--South Lake—
Fishing great the kayak or boat in the island channel and the inlets early and late in the day. It’s deep enough in the back of the lake for fish to be moving back there in increasing numbers. Don’t sleep on the rock slide or the deeper spots in front of the dam - holdovers are super nice but spread out and the stockers tend to hang around the dam before the school breaks up.
HOT SPOTS - inlets, slide, dam.
WHAT’S WORKING - panther Martins, streamers, minijigs and crawlers.
Boat reservations for South Lake can be made here or visit
Fleet is 4 pontoons and 5 motorboats. Hope to drop last toon and 5 more motorboats as soon as the water level comes up a few more feet.
--Bishop Creek--
Perfect flows, not much pressure. DFW has dumped fish...go get 'em. Salmon eggs, jigs, big dry flies.
--Intake 2—
No Report
--North Lake—
No Report.
--Backcountry Angling--No Report. The lakes are thawing so this will change very soon.
