Fish Report for 1-8-2023

Starvation Reservoir has anywhere from 4 to 12 inches of ice

Starvation Reservoir has anywhere from 4 to 12 inches of ice. The main lake is about 9.5 inches with 2 inches of fresh snow on top. Both Knight Hollow and the Strawberry River arm have more slush than mid-lake. Access is plowed in the main lots but snow packed by angler traffic for the rest of the access points. Angler reports vary from each area of the lake. Overall fishing has been fair to good for rainbow trout up to 22 inches. Rainbow trout are cruising at 9 to 14 inches below the surface of the ice in most areas. Walleye and perch are 25 to 45 feet deep and if you can find the right structure you can get a limit of small walleye in an evening. Walleye are feeding on large zooplankton right now which translates to small tungsten jigs being very effective. The bite window is small — 1 to 2 hours in the evening — however, you can still find a few feeding walleye during morning and midday hours. Updated regulations for panfish at Starvation Reservoir took effect on Jan. 1. Please review the 2023 Utah Fishing Guidebook for all regulation changes.

We are still encouraging anglers to target and harvest smaller walleye in this system. Recruitment and survival of small walleye in Starvation Reservoir has been exceptional over the past few years. Forage is still a limiting factor for walleye growth in the reservoir. Harvest of small walleye, from 10 to 16 inches in total length, is encouraged at this time (bag and possession limits apply). Fish this size range from 2 to 5 years old, and we are seeing a "stacking" effect at age 3 for walleye in this system. Please visit Starvation State Park webpage for the most up to date reservoir conditions.
