Truckee has been fishing especially well in the canyon

Trout Creek Outfitters

The cooler weather this week made for improved trout fishing in our area, and the Truckee has been fishing especially well in the canyon where both the flows and the temps remain more consistent due to the confluence of the Little Truckee putting in 221 CFS below Boca. We still recommend focusing on the mornings and carrying your thermometer with you, there has still been reports of water temps hitting 68 degrees in the afternoons, especially in the upper river where the majority of the water will be coming from the top of Lake Tahoe, which will be much warmer. Overall, we still have good flows on the main river and for those willing to get out in the mornings, there is still fair trout fishing to be had.

Truckee River Fly Fishing Report

The fishing on the Truckee has been tough as now is seemingly the slowest point in the year. With that said the conditions are still fairly viable in terms of flows and temps and as long as you look to get out in the mornings, we are still finding some nice fish. As is typical for the summertime, there are quite a few bugs around and fly selection can go a number of ways, so keep a good number of stoneflies, crawdads, caddis, PMD’s, BWO’s and midges, and for the latter 3, fishing them down to an 18 or smaller size has been best.

Look for fish to continue holding in medium to fast water speeds, so focus on pocket water, riffles, and the tops of runs. We have begun to see the larger nocturnal stones around and these are a great option for a larger attractor nymphs starting now and through most of the fall as well as crawdads and golden stones.
