Fish Report for 7-7-2017

Cisco’s Report: Friday July 7th

7-7-2017
Channel Islands Sportfishing

Today was a great day to be on the water. Fishing was good for some but others reported it being a bit of a struggle to put good numbers on the boat. It is after all fishing, and not every day can be wide open. From the looks of things, most of our boats fished in shallow water for a variety of species. Shallow water or surface fishing here means anything from Whitefish and Sheephead to Barracuda, Calico Bass and even Yellowtail. Seems the Barracuda are starting to bite with regularity and there are some White Seabass mixed in with them. No huge numbers but enough to keep the interest. For those fishing the kelp, a chance at Yellowtail while fishing for Calico Bass is a real possibility. Problem is, landing a Yellow in the kelp takes some skill and the proper equipment. Bottom fishing is good but the focus has definitely turned toward surface fishing as of late. Especially during the week days when the boat loads are at a minimum. With that said, we are at the end of the week with Saturday and Sunday ahead. Usually, the boat loads are much heavier on the weekends, so one would assume the bottom fishing counts will go up a lot as it is very difficult to successfully fish top water with so many lines in the water. The weather is very nice right now and looks to stay the same over the weekend. As everyone knows it’s hotter than Hades inland, so coming the coast will be a relief to many because its easily 20 to 30 degrees cooler here. Air temperatures at the Channel Islands are much warmer than normal but fortunately there is a nice breeze to help keep us cool. As for swell its only 3-4 feet at 8 seconds, so it’s fairly smooth out. Today’s Fish Count: 8 Boats and 152 Anglers. 356 Assorted Rockfish, 363 Ocean Whitefish, 8 Sheephead, 4 Sculpin, 4 Lingcod, 30 Calico Bass, 5 Perch, 1 Yellowtail, 141 Barracuda, and 23 White Seabass For a detailed boat by boat count, Click Here--> http://www.channelislandssportfishing.com If you can make it, the Oxnard/Channel Islands are is a great place to spend the weekend.
